Affecting millions of Americans each year, lymphedema is a chronic condition where lymph fluid (swelling) builds up in parts of the body where vessels are damaged or distorted. While there are many different causes of lymphedema, it frequently occurs following cancer treatment where radiation therapy is used or when lymph nodes are removed. Fortunately, there is treatment! If lymphedema is left untreated or inadequately treated, it may lead to complications and/or loss of function.
The highly qualified and extensively trained therapists at Brookwood Baptist Health take a multi-faceted approach to treat this condition and help prevent functional impairments.
FAQS
Is there a cure for lymphedema?
Though there is no cure, lymphedema can be managed with proper treatment and care. The safest and most effective treatment is Complete Decongestive Therapy (CDT).
What does a lymphedema treatment program look like at BBH?
Our certified lymphedema physical therapists perform evaluations and set individualized treatment programs for each patient. The program consists of four components of CDT including:
- Manual Lymph Drainage – a gentle manual technique to move the fluid out of the affected area
- Exercise – helping to stimulate the lymphatic system and get fluid moving again
- Compression – decreasing the excess fluid and helping to soften the tissue.
- Skin Care – meticulous skin and nail care for the affected limb to keep skin healthy and protect against infections.
What are the specific benefits of undergoing Complete Decongestive Therapy?
- Decreased swelling
- Softened hard tissue
- Reduced pain/discomfort
- Prevention of infection
- Improved circulation
- Decreased open wound drainage
- Increased functional independence
- Improved physical appearance
- Independence in self-maintenance
- Improved self-esteem and body image
What can happen if lymphedema is not treated?
If left untreated, this condition can cause a variety of health concerns including:
- Cosmetic Deformity
- Pain/Discomfort
- Hardening of Skin and Tissue
- Joint Stiffness
- Difficulty carrying out daily activities
- Infection and Open Wounds
- Amputation
- Multiple Hospitalizations
